Insightful But Insulting, Caustic and Rejecting
Saw this doctor for many years and while she was at first helpful and supportive, she essentially fired me as a patient in a most painful and inappropriate way. She seemed to develop a dislike for me personally, possibly because I didn't always follow her guidance. Maybe I should see a shrink for this behaviour...Wait, I WAS seeing a shrink for this behaviour. Whatever her reasons, she was angry, hostile, rude, contemptuous, sarcastic and caustic. Her personal feelings and frustration with me as a patient led her to be angry and worse yet, display that anger and contempt in a damaging way. After nearly a decade, on and off, in therapy with Dr de Rappard, I think I was owed more than contempt. I respected her until the moment she became personal and showed her dislike. As a patient, I showed up, didn't always do the work, but always did what I could. That, I'm assuming is fairly typical patient behaviour. If I was a malcontent, or slow to change, or stuck in patterns of self-damaging behaviour, this is not something I or any patient should be judged for. THIS is what defines therapy is it not? Otherwise, we wouldn't need it and psychiatrists would be out of work. I'm not sure what happened. It was very confusing and the most difficult rejection I've ever experienced as an adult. So, if you are someone with garden variety psychiatric hangnails and need some short-term counselling from someone who does have insight, go for it. But if you are someone who is in great pain, with lifelong psychiatric/emotional problems who is a) slow to change, b) difficult at times, c)stuck in old behaviours, or d) a typical psychiatric patient, then curl up with a bottle or smoke some pot. You'd have more fun and it would be far less damaging
