  “Periodontics” is a dental specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease that affects the gums and jawbone. It is the gum tissues that surround and support the teeth, and the underlying jawbone that anchors the teeth firmly in place. A periodontist is a dentist who has completed additional training and is responsible for maintaining the function, health and aesthetics of the jawbone and tissues. The reasons for periodontal treatment A periodontal disease is a progressive condition that begins with a mild inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. People living in developed countries are most likely to lose teeth as a result of this condition, and it should be taken very seriously. In most cases, periodontal disease (often called gum disease) is characterized by red, swollen, painful, or bleeding gums, although it can also have no symptoms at all. In general, periodontal disease occurs when the bacteria living in plaque cause an infection in the tissues surrounding the teeth, causing them to become inflamed and painful. As a result of this infection, the jawbone will recede and the tooth will become loose. Several factors may lead to the need for periodontal treatment: Gum disease that is moderate or advanced – There is bleeding, swelling, or redness around most teeth, and the jawbone is receding. Localized gum recession – Infections that propagate moderate or advanced gum disease often begin in one area. The recession of the gums may also be caused by overbrushing with a hard bristle brush, or by an improperly positioned tooth. There is a need to treat the condition as soon as possible in order to prevent further spread of the disease. Before crown lengthening – Periodontists may be able to lengthen the crown of the tooth by removing the soft tissue surrounding the tooth in order to expose more of the tooth. Ridge augmentation – This procedure, often referred to as “recontouring”, may be necessary in order to correct an uneven gum line. It is important for a periodontist to treat any bacterial infection as well as periodontitis before embarking on a treatment plan. The periodontist will focus on curing the underlying bacterial infection when treating mild/moderate periodontal problems and will then provide advice on the most appropriate methods for home cleaning. It is sometimes necessary to perform a deep scaling in order to remove the bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth and tissues. It may be necessary to remove loose teeth that cannot be saved when periodontal disease has advanced and the jawbone has regressed significantly.   Periodontal refers to the area around the teeth. The gums and the bone that support the teeth are attacked by periodontal disease, which is a type of infection. You can reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease by staying on top of your oral hygiene, eating a balanced diet, and having regular dental appointments. Symptoms and signs of periodontal disease include the following: Having bad breath all the time – It’s caused by bacteria. Pus around the teeth and gums – This indicates the presence of an infection in the mouth. Receding gums – The absence of gum around the teeth as a result of periodontal disease. Red and puffy gums – If your gums are red or swollen, they should be treated as soon as possible. Bleeding gums – Even when brushing vigorously or using dental floss, your gums should not bleed.   There is a specialized branch of dentistry known as endodontics that deals with the complex structures found within the teeth. In Greek, “Endodontics” means “inside the tooth,” which refers to the pulp, tissues, nerves, and arterioles within the tooth. In addition to completing dental school, endodontists receive additional training in order to be able to perform both complex and simple procedures, including root canals. Historically, a tooth with a diseased nerve would be extracted immediately, but endodontists are now able to save most natural teeth. Damaged teeth can generally be restored to health and functionality by removing the inner tooth structures and sealing the gap with a crown. The following are signs and symptoms of endodontic disease: Gum inflammation and tenderness. The teeth are sensitive to hot and cold foods. A feeling of tenderness when chewing and biting. Discoloration of the teeth. Lymph node pain that is unexplained. Reasons for endodontic treatment In order to preserve the natural tooth, endodontic treatment (or root canal therapy) is performed. While many advanced restorations are available, most dentists agree that healthy, natural teeth cannot be substituted. The following are some of the most common causes of inner tooth damage: Bacterial infections – The most common cause of endodontic problems is oral bacteria. Due to tooth decay or injury, bacteria can enter the pulp of the tooth through tiny fissures in the teeth. As a result of the inflammation and bacterial infection, the affected tooth may be at risk of developing an abscess. Dental injuries – A direct or indirect blow to the mouth can result in injuries to the teeth. It is possible for a tooth to become luxated, or dislodged from its socket, as a result of some injuries. An endodontist may recommend root canal therapy after successfully stabilizing an injured tooth. Fractures and chips – There may be a need for root canal therapy when the surface or crown of a tooth has become completely detached. It is possible for the pulp to become debilitatingly painful and problematic after the crown portion has been removed. Removing teeth – As soon as possible after a tooth is knocked out of its socket, it should be rinsed and placed back into its socket. Alternatively, if this is not possible, place the tooth in a special dental solution (available at pharmacies) or in milk. In this manner, the inner mechanisms of the tooth will be kept moist and alive while emergency dental treatment is sought. After the tooth has been affixed in its socket with a special splint, the endodontist will perform root canal therapy in order to save the tooth. What does an endodontic procedure invlove? It usually takes between one and three visits to complete root canal therapy. A complete set of X-rays of the teeth will be taken and examined before treatment begins. The procedure will begin with the administration of a local anesthetic and the placement of a dental dam (protective sheet) to ensure that the surgical area remains free of saliva throughout the procedure. Using small handheld instruments, an opening will be made in the surface of the tooth, and the pulp will be completely removed. Now it is time to shape, clean, and fill the space with gutta-percha. The material gutta-percha is biocompatible and somewhat similar to rubber. On top of the cement, the root canals will be completely sealed off. Prior to the permanent restoration procedure, a temporary filling will usually be placed to restore functionality to the tooth. • Dental Anxiety and Fear

  A common cause of anxiety is the overwhelming fear of dental appointments. People often imagine a drill-wielding man in a white coat waiting to cause pain and remove teeth. However, the reality is quite different. Every good dental practice places a high priority on the comfort, relaxation, and happiness of its patients. During treatment, the staff at the practice will do everything they can to reduce anxiety, allay fears and make the process as painless as possible. In many cases, dentists can replace noisy drills with painless laser beams thanks to technological advancements. Additionally, a wide variety of safe anesthetics are available during routine appointments to alleviate pain and reduce anxiety.
